Austria probably has more names for coffee than anywhere else. In Vienna you can order at least 20 different drinks, and almost none of them are called what you'd expect.

A short glossary

• Verlängerter Brauner – a long coffee, roughly a café crème
• Schale Braun – café au lait with a dash of milk
• Schale Gold – the same with a lot of milk
• Kleiner Schwarzer or kleiner Mokka – a strong espresso
• Grosser Schwarzer or grosser Mokka – a double espresso
• Einspänner – espresso in a glass, topped with cream and icing sugar
• Fiaker – strong coffee with a dash of alcohol, served in a glass

The Kaiser-Melange

The refined version of the mélange: coffee with milk and milk foam, where the cream is blended with an egg yolk. It dates from the First World War, when cream was harder to come by than eggs.

Making them at home

Most of these are within reach of a JURA machine. A Verlängerter is a café crème. A kleiner Schwarzer is an espresso. A Schale Gold is close to a caffè latte. The names are the hard part, not the coffee.
